Identifying Addiction
People often ask, "How do I know if I, or someone I care about has a drug or drinking problem?" Many people believe that drug or alcohol use is not a "real problem" if users don't experience drastic negative consequences. However:
- Most alcoholics are "typical" people - married, employed and have families.
- Alcoholism is one of America's largest health problems.
- Approximately one out of every 10 drinkers is an alcoholic.
Addiction On The Job
- A typical employee experiencing problems with alcohol or other drug use:
- Is late three times more often.
- Requests time off 2.2 times more often.
- Has 2.5 times as many absences of eight days or more.
- Uses three times the normal level of sick benefits.
- Is five times more likely to file a worker's compensation claim.
- Is involved in accidents 3.6 times more often. (Indiana Prevention Resource Center Infosite, 2002).
Checklist
You or someone you know might have a problem with alcohol or other drugs if . . .
- Even when trying to cut down, you frequently wind up under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
- You're uncomfortable when alcohol or other drugs are not available. You have a few extra drinks before the evening begins that others don't know about.
- You regret things you've said or done when under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- You handle all social celebrations with alcohol or other drugs.
- You drink alcohol or use other drugs heavily after a confrontation or argument.
- When faced with a problem, your immediate reaction is to drink or use other drugs.
- Drinking or using other drugs changes your personality - from shy to outgoing, or vice versa.
- It takes more alcohol or other drugs than it used to to get the same effect.
- You've missed work or school because of your substance abusing behavior.
- You've been arrested for driving under the influence.
- You're angry or alarmed when others mention your substance abusing behavior.
- Your hands shake in the morning.
- You feel alone, scared, miserable or depressed.
One or more "yes" answers indicates a possible drinking or drug problem and the need for prompt help. Millions of people have family, social, legal or job problems related to alcohol or drugs, but don't fit the definition of an alcoholic or addict. Remember problem drinkers and drug users need help too.
